New Braunfels - A Brief History

New Braunfels is situated within both Comal and Guadalupe county of the vast Texas hill country. The city was first established by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels in 1845. He was a Commissioner General of the Noblemen’s Society, a German community, and named his settlement after his home; Solms-Braunfels. This society was responsible for organizing the move for several hundreds of German immigrants to Texas.

In 1844, these immigrants began arriving in Galveston and were moving upwards towards the North. Texas Ranger, John Coffee Hays quickly realized that the new settlers would not make it to the new land in time to settle and grow crops before the winter. So, Prince Solms purchased almost 7 miles of land, and as the settlers travelled along the Guadalupe River, they stopped when they reached the Comal Springs to begin building their new lives.

By 1850, New Braunfels had made a name for itself as the 4th largest city throughout the state of Texas after Galveston, San Antonio and Houston. Today New Braunfels is home to just over 66,000 inhabitants.

Local Attractions

Every year New Braunfels hosts an annual Wurstfest in November, which is a 10 day German-style sausage festival that attracts visitors from all over the state of Texas. The Guadalupe and Comal rivers have also become a hot-spot tourist attraction for families during the summer months, as these cold-spring rivers are famous for tubing. The rivers draw crowds of visitors who are looking to kick back, relax, and leisurely float down the cool waters of the Texas hill country. For those seeking a more nature-loving experience, New Braunfels is home to the Natural Bridge Caverns which feature zip-lines, running trails and exhilarating underground caves.
